Officer accused of fraudulent workers' compensation claims

Fraudulent workers' compensation claims can be financially damaging to county offices and other businesses through increased premiums and the cost of medical care. When an employee attempts to gain benefits that are not entitled, an employer may feel the need to look into the situation and proceed with action. A California County Probation Chief reported that one of his officers was recently arrested for potentially fraudulent workers' compensation claims.

The woman's employer first suspected the workers' compensation claim to be false after she submitted a disability claim. Once reviewed, officials from the Department of Insurance found reason to believe that the officer had embellished information in the claim. They suspect this was done to collect additional benefits from supplemental disability compensation.

The juvenile detention officer was accused of submitting a fraudulent claim to insurance and procuring false documents. The late-night arrest kept the woman in jail until the following day when she was later released on bail. A person who has attempted to collect benefits through illegal actions may face serious consequences after being discovered.

Records reveal that the arrest came following an investigation into an ongoing problem of fraudulent workers' compensation claims among county officers who work in probation. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and authorities from the California Probation Department worked together to uncover the potential problem and instigate action. An executive or business owner who suspects an employee of a false injury claim may desire to proceed with legal action following an investigation, in an attempt to recover monetary loss.
