The price is "wrong." Injured employee seen on game show

The workers compensation system in California is designed to help injured workers maintain a certain semblance of living while they are recovering from their injuries and are unable to work. A number of workers every year take advantage of the benefits available for the right reasons (i.e. they were injured on the job). However, there are a chosen few who break the law.

In our prior posts, we have highlighted a number of instances where employees have fraudulently taken benefits. They include postal workers, mechanics and even politicians. However, the story of a contestant who appeared on CBS’ “The Price is Right” is a troubling example of a growing trend with workers’ comp claims.

The woman, who was collecting $3,000 per month in workers’ compensation benefits was shown waving her arms and running giddily down from her seat in the audience to the front row, where she would bid on an item that would be her ticket to get to one of the bigger prizes offered.

The only problem was, she had claimed in her benefits application that she had a serious shoulder injury, and could not stand, run, reach or grasp. Essentially, the injuries, as she claimed, left her unable to work. Nevertheless, she was shown on the iconic game show spinning the heavy wheel in order to get to the “Showcase Showdown.” She even spun the wheel twice.

Faulty workers compensation claims cost employers hundreds of millions each year. Also the National Insurance Crime Bureau reports that questionable claims are up nearly 25 percent each year. Because of this, it is prudent to have an experienced workers’ comp defense attorney review claims against a business.
