OSHA investigation into a California construction fatality

When an employer fails to provide a safe working environment, workers can be seriously hurt or killed. A recent OSHA investigation into a California construction fatality could uncover potential liabilities in the accident. The family of a worker who loses his or her life while on the job could have rightful access to workers' compensation benefits that can be used for medical and funeral expenses.

The employee who lost his life was in the process of moving an excavation machine from land onto a barge when the accident occurred. Reports state that the machine slid off of the boat and into the moderately deep water of the river while the man was driving. The excavator sank through the water and lodged into the soft soil bed, burying a portion of the compartment that held the worker. The man was not able to escape the wreckage.

The accident required diving responders close to three hours to uncover the cab of the machine where the construction worker was found deceased. It has not been stated what may have caused the vehicle to lose its grounding and descend into the water or what the exact cause of death was for the construction worker involved. The Cal-OSHA investigation is expected to reach a conclusion by the spring, at which time they will release their professional opinion.

Failure to maintain a safe working environment can have irreversible consequences for employees and the general public with whom they come into contact. This OSHA investigation into a California construction fatality could reveal unknown information regarding the cause of the tragic accident. The surviving loved ones of a deceased victim in such circumstances may seek professional help in obtaining workers' compensation to assist in the financial burden that can accompany the death of a loved one while on the job.
