California workers' compensation bill drawing attention in NFL

Workers' compensation can be a touchy subject for the parties involved. The system is in place to help protect workers in case of an injury, but because of some people that have abused the system, benefits can be hard to receive for those that are in need. A recent California article involving two NFL players has drawn attention to workers' compensation benefits for players in the league.

Tom Brady and Drew Brees, both quarterbacks for the NFL have spoken out against a new bill being proposed in California that would limit the amount of workers' compensation benefits players would be entitled to. The proposed bill would limit the amount of time a player has to file a claim. They would be limited to one year after their final NFL game or a year after the physician's official diagnosis. Both Brady and Brees have pointed out that this isn't fair to athletes and feels they are being singled out.

Another point that was made is that the player would have to have played the majority of their games in California. The players also pointed out they feel the bill is unfair because they pay their share to the state and for insurance coverage just as any other employee. This could ultimately be seen as discrimination if the bill continues.

Any California worker looking to file a workers' compensation claim will likely benefit from knowing their rights under the state law. Taking a proactive approach and arming oneself with as much knowledge as possible can also prove critical when moving forward. When a person knows what they are entitled to it can make the process easier as they decide how to best move forward with any action necessary.
