California hospital extends work injury coverage

Every workplace has its unique health risks. Whether it be a construction site, office complex, or classroom, the places in which Americans go to work each day are ridden with potentially dangerous situations and circumstances. When an injury does occur on the job, employers must be ready for a potential compensation claim.

While many businesses across all industries often attempt to shirk the legal, medical, and financial compensation owed to an injured worker, one California hospital recently improved its compensation and care offerings by leaps and bounds, signing a new contract agreement with nurses that will make going to work a much more secure, reassuring experience.

Centinela Hospital Medical Center announced earlier this week the terms of its new labor agreement with the California Nurses Association and National Nurses United. The three year deal was met with wide approval by the more than 500 registered nurses the CNA/NNU represents. Featuring an enhanced accidental death and dismemberment insurance policy, the hospital now offers nurses greater benefits in events of assault and exposure to dangerous diseases such as hepatitis or HIV.

In addition to the AD&D coverage, bereavement and trauma counseling, travel assistance, and compensation for accidental injuries will be enjoyed by Centinela nurses. The agreement may serve as a precedent for future healthcare worker-employer contract terms, as more and more hospital workplace dangers are being uncovered and dutifully addressed.

While Centinela Hospital's example may serve as a new model for employers to consider, one which may limit the overall number of claims and help to more proactively address accidents. In the event of a compensation claim, however, an experienced workplace injury lawyer can be an invaluable asset throughout the process of litigation.
