Report finds that California has third highest work comp rates in the U.S.

Earlier this month, the Oregon Department of Consumer and Business Services released the preliminary results of its "2012 Workers' Compensation Premium Rate Ranking Summary" for its state legislature. The much-anticipated report, which is released every two years, ranks every state -- from highest to lowest -- according to their workers' compensation premium rates.

As always, the report yielded some very interesting results:

  • The state of North Dakota once again had the lowest workers' compensation premium rates in the entire nation. An average of only $1.01 of every $100 of payroll went to pay work comp premiums. This was well below the national median -- determined by the Department of Consumer and Business Services to be $1.88 for every $100 of payroll.
  • The state of Alaska had the highest workers' compensation premium rates in the entire nation. An average of $3.01 of every $100 of payroll went to pay work comp premiums. This represented almost 160 percent of the national median.
  • The state of California was third in the nation for workers' compensation premiums (up from 5 in 2010 and 13 in 2008). An average of $2.92 of every $100 of payroll went to pay work comp premiums. This represented 155 percent of the national median.

Overall, the five states with the lowest work comp premiums were determined to be:

  1. North Dakota
  2. Indiana
  3. Arkansas
  4. Virginia
  5. District of Columbia

The five states with the highest work comp premiums were determined to be:

  1. Alaska
  2. Connecticut
  3. California
  4. Illinois
  5. New York

While you may question the value of a report prepared by a state agency, the Oregon DBCS report is actually relied upon rather heavily by both state lawmakers across the country and work comp advocacy groups.
