Making the cut: A few lawn mowing safety tips for landscaping companies

Now that summer is officially here, many landscaping companies across the state of California are kicking their operations into full gear. From pruning tree lines and installing retaining walls to laying sod and planting flowers, the owners and operators of these landscaping companies always need to take the necessary precautions to prevent serious work injuries and avoid potential liability.

Interestingly, a vital task performed by most landscaping companies that presents perhaps the greatest safety risk yet is frequently overlooked in most safety analyses is lawn mowing.

The truth is that the spinning blades, hot motors and self-propelled capabilities of most riding and push mowers can cause serious work injuries to employees - many of whom are often teenagers working over the summer months.

Today's post will examine a few basic safety steps that employers providing lawn mowing services may wish to consider implementing.

  • Take steps to ensure that safety shields are installed on all mowers
  • Take steps to ensure that all power mowers have safety release handles/pedals that render the blades inoperable if released
  • Make certain that only older employees operate riding mowers
  • Make certain that all employees wear the necessary safety gear, including protective eyewear/goggles, shoes and pants
  • Make certain that employees check the mowing surface beforehand to remove debris (sticks, rocks, etc.) that could be sent flying
  • Inform employees of the importance of not mowing in poor weather or in fading daylight
  • Inform employees of the importance of turning off the mower and allowing it to cool before being refilled with gasoline
  • Implement a safety training program outlining the risks of mowing and proper operating procedures
